In the El Malei Raḥamim prayer, by contrast, one says: “the soul of so-and-so, the son/daughter of so-and-so,” because he (or they) pledged, or others pledged, charity for the mention of his soul; therefore may his soul (or their souls) be [bound in eternal life].
Me-It seems the common practice is to promise to give in the future. Wouldn’t it be more logical to first give and then ask?
