HaRav Shraga Kallus 5/4/2022-INTRODUCTION TO HILCHOS SHIHIYA
This shiur sets out some of the basic concerns for shhia, hatmana and hachzara and then discusses some practical implications. There’s a difference between a psychological concern that you’ll want to continue cooking and one that your act will look like cooking.
HaRav Asher Weiss 5/1/2022-SEFIRAS HAOMER
Women’s exemption from sfirat haomer? Rambam says it is not a mitzvah aseih shehazman grama. Why not? Women today should count sfira!
Ntilat yadayim is an important drabanan (since it has asmachtsa as a source). Is it due to srach truma or nkiut? Is it a mitzvah or matir?
HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinsky 5/3/2022-IYUNIM BHILCHOS SHIHIYA
Mchateh – is it showing you’re not thinking about cooking or is it to reduce the heat? Current day applications discussed for blechs, knobs, crockpots et al.
HaRav Shaul Katz 5/5/2022-HAKDAMAH TO HILCHOS SHIHIYA
Shiaa is a problem of shema yichateh – practically it can be avoided with garuf (coals taken) or katum (covered). Chazara (if fully cooked) could still be machzei kmvasheil – thus workarounds are explained herein.
HaRav Shraga Kallus 5/11/2022-PRINCIPLES OF SHIHIYA
How do we paskin the machloket of chizkia and the rabannan in garuf and and katum’s application to shiaa? Why does the Rama sometimes say vchen nohagim and sometimes vnahagu?
HaRav Uri Deutsch 5/12/2022-יסודי הלכות שהייה וחזרה
Lomdus on the machloket Rambam/Ramach and cooking after maachal ben drosai status has been reached.
HaRav Asher Weiss 5/15/2022-ברך על המצוה ונמלך
If one makes the bracha al nitilat yadaim and then decided not to eat, is it a bracha lvatala?
HaRav Shaul Katz 5/16/2022-THE PRINCIPLES OF BISHUL
Studies in garuf vkatum, knas on active vs. passive violations, and the machloket between Chanania and the Rabanan.
HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinsky 5/17/2022-עיונים בהלכות בישול
“Kderech kayta” – under what conditions can you leave something on the flame (without a blech) when you know it won’t be ready until the next morning?
HaRav Shraga Kallus 5/18/2022-HILCHOS SHIHIYA – HALACHA LIMAYSEH
More on garuf vkatum being evidence of non-normal cooking intent. The Chazon Ish understood these are ruining of the flame and thus a blech wouldn’t meet the criteria. Do modern stove tops and ovens have a different nature than those of the gemara? (yes, but we’re machmir anyway). Also discussed, how to properly use a crockpot (maybe tinfoil inserts isn’t enough)
HaRav Asher Weiss 5/22/2022-TORAH OR MITZVOS: WHICH HAS PREFERENCE IN HALACHA
Which is greater – Talmud tora or maaseh? It’s really both! Tora which brings to maaseh is the best (not just knowledge but also desire).
HaRav Uri Deutsch 5/19/2022-יסודי הלכות שהייה וחזרה
We can learn an important insight into the nature of chitui (and chanania) from the gemara’s differentiation of the concern for chitui in a kira vs. a tanur.
HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinsky 5/29/2022-Hilchos Bishul: New Halachic Issues
Ovens and stovetops are different today so we need to match our mitziut to chazal’s concerns.
Cooking on top of a kdeira – what were the chazal’s concerns and how do they apply to stoves, ovens and crockpots today?
HaRav Shraga Kallus 5/25/2022-HILCHOS BISHUL LIMAYSEH: SHIYA VCHAZARA
Shehiya in our day – covering knobs is likely not enough, we need to show we’re not in the cooking process. This means if you always leave tinfoil in the crockpot, it doesn’t help since it looks like it’s your regular cooking process.
Also covered – is mitztameik vyafeh/vra lo based on you, your guests or a larger community?
HaRav Uri Deutsch 5/26/2022-עיונים בהלכות בישול – ודברי מחשבה
Is shiah defined by the act or the state of being (eg if put on while the flame was dampened and then flame grew) Don’t adjust the flame once the blech is on (else you’re showing cooking interest)
HaRav Asher Weiss 5/29/2022-Inyanei Chag HaShavuos
There are many practices as to what to learn for tikkun leil Shavuot, they’re all good.
Standing for aseret hadibrot is also fine (Yisrael are bnai nviim).
HaRav Dovid Heber 5/30/2022-Contemporary Halachic Issues: Bishul and Related Questions
Topics include: practical determination of maachal ben drosai, crockpot issues (shihia and chazara – mechzei kmvashel), avsha milsa (machine noise issue), chaita (does putting in raw ingredients right before shabbat work today) and amira lakum.
HaRav Moshe Heinemann 5/30/2022-Technology in Hilchos Shabbos
Hot plates with thermostats are a shabbat problem. Urns with reheating functions are a problem but glass water level indicators are. Kdeira blech is questionable. Long discussion of yom tov mode – what were the issues and solutions.
HaRav Shaul Katz 6/7/2022-Hilchos Shabbos Bishul – The Shabbos Blech
Warming drawers can be a shiya or hachzara issue. Does anyone use such a drawer to cook? Where is the heat source? Is the temperature adjustable?
Also covered – hot water urns

HaRav Uri Deutsch 6.2.2022-חג השבועות בהלכה ובמחשבה
Special simcha on Shavout – is it part of simchat yom tov? Duraita or drabanan? Either way, kabalat hatora transforms us.
C.I. vs R Moshe on blechs (is it garuf/katum or min hatzaad)? Do you have to cover the fire, the knobs or both?
HaRav Asher Weiss 6/12/2022-BIRCHAS KOHANIM
Is the mitzvah of birchat Cohanim only on the Cohanim or on the Yisraelim as well? R Weiss thinks it’s on Cohanim but it’s also the ratzon hatora that the Yisraelim be blessed bahava.

HaRav Shaul Katz 6/27/2022-CONDITIONS FOR PERMISSIBLE CHAZARA
Is the concern in hachzara one of chsash chitui or mechzei kmvash? What combination of byado and dato lachzor are required to allow it? (and how are they defined?)
HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinksky 6/28/2022-CHAZARA ON EREV SHABOOS
Discussion of the (little known) issue of hachzara on erev Shabbat. What are the workarounds?
HaRav Shraga Kallus 6/29/2022-APPLICATIONS IN HILCHOS CHAZARA
Chulent fully cooked before Shabbat except for the bones-problem? Is simply softening the bones a problem of cooking or only if people do (sample space TBD) eat them?
Why isn’t al gabo but not btocho seen as a problem for our ovens and/or crockpots?
HaRav Uri Deutsch 6/30/2022-IYUNIM IN HILCHOS CHAZARA
Why isn’t chazarah a davar sheyeish lo matirin? Does intent to return to the heat source require positive daat or just not negative data(not to return?
HaRav Don Blumberg 7/3/2022-TOSFOS SHABBOS – EARLY SHABBOS
Accepting Shabbat early can’t be before plag (TBD) and might it sometimes actually turn Friday night into Shabbos and sometimes not?
HaRav Asher Weiss 7/3/2022-HALACHIC DILEMMAS – ABORTION
Review of more sources on the status of a fetus. R Weiss views it not as a nefesh but potential life that could eventually observe many Shabatot. Specific applications discussed.
HaRav Dovid Heber 7.4.2022-HALACHOS OF SUMMER TRAVEL

HaRav Zev Smith 7.4.2022-EARLY SHABBOS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
Early Shabbat – how does it work? (the whole turn Friday night into Shabbat issue) Lots of specific applications discussed.
HaRav Shraga Kallus 7/6/2022-PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS – CHAZARA
Heating challah on the cholent pot could have basar vchalav issues. This method, and upside-down pans, make it obvious that ein derech bishul bkach. Does a kdeirah blech work in a similar way?
Specific causes of putting kugel on a pot and then later on the blech (R Kalus works out a way to do it – I’m guessing most folks would not get the lomdus or practice) and getting hot water into a boiling cholent (apparently this is a case that we can rely on leniencies!)
HaRav Uri Deutsch 7/7/2022-עיונים בהלכות חזרה
More on “heating” food on Shabbat on top of a pot and the application to a kdeira blech (no good).

HaRav Shaul Katz 7/25/2022-THE DIN OF CROCKPOTS
Hatmana basics coming to a different conclusion on crockpots than R’ A Weiss
HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinksky 7/26/2022-IYUNIM B’HILCHOS HATMANA
More on hatmana – kulo vs. miktzat. Some interesting side issues including: 1. in tshuvat rama he writes that in the darkei moshe when he writes “vheim nahagu” he doesn’t mean that it’s the din but that’s what’s done. When he writes ”vchen nohagin” it means it’s mikar hadin (and thus the former is more subject to being overridden). 2. “Some say” parts of the mishna brurah were written by the chofetz chaim’s son-in-law. Even if this is true, the chazon Ish says it’s heresy to use that to explain conflicts in the mishna brura (Me-paying R Hershel Schacter) 3 when the mishna brura names a source (within the text, not in the sharei tzion) it means he doesn’t hold by it 4 tin foil doesn’t work for halachic reasons to defeat crock pot hatmana (need to use an empty tuna can)
HaRav Shraga Kallus 7/27/2022-INYAN HATMANA HALACHA LIMAYSEH
Hatmana topics including: hatmana bmiktzat, hatmana meelav (towel fell and covered all the pots), change in intent (covered to protect, left on to heat), and the minhag to have hot food on shabbat. In the context of having hot food on shabbat (eg have it during the day and more than a hot drink), R Kallus says “the more you are machmir the better you are”. I’m not sure about this as a general approach to life and it’s particularly interesting in this case given all the complexities this series has emphasized in the Shabbos kitchen. Would the sum total of sabbath observance be increased if people ate cold food on shabbat?
HaRav Uri Deutsch 7/28/2022-BIURIM B’HILCHOS HATMANA
Bringing together hatmana and shihiya opinions for various applications.
