Note to a Rabbi re: “family room” at chapel:
Just curious whether you’ve ever gotten any traction with people not doing the open house at the funeral chapel. I’m sure there are some people who know you’re not allowed to comfort it just seems like a big chukat hagoyim/lfnei iver. Fwiw my sister and I told people we observed minhag eretz yisrael by not circulating before the levaya. Of course my wife had to explain to everybody who was looking for us:-(

Note to a Rabbi re Covid mussar:
I was making the same point about everyone “”going back to normal” to our group studying hilchot tshuva concerning our communal response to Covid. I drew an analogy to eliyahu har hacarmel. It seems that one time events that are challenging may change people in the moment but it’s much harder to make /deot/ time change. I also pointed out that that may be the difference between repentance from and repentance to or a complete repentance versus plain repentance as described by the Rambam

I’d simply add that reading 8:4 in tshuva what should I summarize as don’t be fooled by all the candy in this world that will be your olam haba
