Yerach Ha’Eisonim Series

HaRav Asher Weiss-
What is the nature of hiddur mitzvah?  It’s been posited as a duraita, duraita w/ rabbinic definition or hanhaga tova.  Perhaps there are two categories (generic and specific to a specific mitzvah).

HaRav Lipa Geldwerth-
Elul mussar including Elul = Eileh lehayim vela lmavet

HaRav Avi Weisenfeld:-
        Hilchot etrog reviewed

HaRav Yosef Elefant-
Defining lachem by etrog – is it baalut (ownership) or edibility?  (Chiddush of the avnei miluim).  Matanah al mnat lhachzir also examined.

HaRav Nisan Kaplan-
Is there a mitzvah duraita of four minim in Yerushalayim/old city and what are the implications?  (Me – is the “old city” the historically correct definition?)
        Are pitum-less etrogim acceptable?
If you have a more hiddur and a less hiddur etrog, which do you give your father(if he’s not paying for both)?  R’SZA says you take the hiddur [me – you must?]  I know we generally say one shouldn’t sin in order to benefit someone else but do we say one must privilege himself over others?(Hilchot Talmud Torah 2:4 worth considering?)

HaRav Asher Weiss-
Is mitzvat sukkah kiyumit or chiyuvit?  The latter – it’s about literally considering it your home (like eretz yisrael).  [me – as R’YBS might say – a constant latent awareness]

HaRav Reuven Leuchter-
When Covid prevents communal prayer we need to find other ways to accomplish meaningful prayer (which is one of the purposes of communal prayer).  Hakarat hatov doesn’t mean simply saying thank you (as if to discharge an obligation) but to use what you’ve been given.  Look at mitzvot as an opportunity!

HaRav Simcha Bunim Londinsky-
The mitzvah of sukkah is to make it your bayit, doing so is your kiyum (again R’YBS latent awareness).  It should be clear that you’ve left your house (me – e.g. move your table in).  While in general an action can stand in for intent, that’s only when the action makes the intent obvious.  By sukkah you should verbally articulate your intent.

HaRav Shraga Kallus-
Defining mitztaer patur min hasukkah (the pain must come from the sukkah and be relieved by leaving it).  Specific applications discussed.  Pretend that you’re getting big bucks to be there!

HaRav Asher Weiss-
Is the mitzvah to blow shofar or to hear it?  R’Weiss understands the maaseh is the blowing and the kiyum is the hearing.  Which do we look to for the form of the bracha?  In any event we blow for HKB”H but must wake ourselves!

HaRav Meir Tzvi Spitzer-
Why and how we blow 100 kolot?  We might count 100 for HKB”H differently than counting larbeiv et hasatan.  Perhaps chazal set up the various kolot to reflect types of crying that would be common in future years.

HaRav Chaim Meir Roth-
Avodah lomdus and specific description thereof.

HaRav Asher Weiss-Cholim on Yom Kippur In The Time Of Corona
Summary of R’Weiss’s corona positions – we base all halachic decisions on current medical knowledge corona.  Q&A including:  R’Y Salanter cholera/Yom Kippur story; Mikveh; Large weddings; and Yom Kippur fasting.

HaRav Shmuel Kaminetsky-
        Short words of encouragement.

HaRav Chaim Mordechai Ausband-
Slichot should be a time of pachad and yiraah, we give to HKB”H our boshet panim.  We should appreciate that we’ve survived Covid (me – and those who didn’t or have lost close ones?)

HaRav Shlomo Cynamon-
If Yom Tov (especially Rosh Hashanah) falls on Shabbat, can you accept tosefet Yom Tov at the end of the day but not tosefet Shabbat? If so, maybe you should do so on Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbat and then blow shofar in that time period.  Or maybe there’s a difference between Yom Hadin and the Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah (and you can’t extend yom hadin?)
When we can’t blow shofar because of ones, we get a perfect score on shofar!

HaRav Zev Smith-

Not wearing leather shoes on Yom Kippur – is it about shoes in general, leather in particular, or discomfort (inui)?  There are a number of opinions and thus differing applications.  There is a fundamental hashkafic difference between shoes on Yom Kippur and Tisha B’av, based on the nature of the days.

HaRav Shlomo Feivel Schustal-
What is the nature (hanhaga) of asseret ymei tshuva (fasting).  What is the nature of Rosh Hashana (eating and drinking).  How about Yom Hadin?  So what do we think about fasting on Shabbat Shuva?  Shabbat Rosh Hashana?
How do we understand the Rambam’s hilchot tshuva saying to do tshuva and not mentioning other mitzvot.

HaRav Asher Weiss-
Is tshuva a command or a privilege?  The former!  (me – and the latter!!)

HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein-
If you don’t respect your rav, his zchut won’t save you
How do we reach an understanding of the malchut of HKB”H?  Also included, examples of matzdikei rabbim.

HaRav Yitzchok Sorotzkin-
Maybe there are two levels of tshuva – regular and gemura (complete).  This could explain seemingly contradictory sources on whether Yom Kippur can atone for all sins.

HaRav Yosef Elefant-
Is the hishtachava we pray for at mussaf that of taking leave of the mikdash, of reah of the mikdash, of tfilla, or of avodah?

HaRav Elya Brudny-
Guarding our lives is important – follow the Covid rules.  Be organized and prepared for Yom Kippur.  There are a lot of stumbling blocks out there!

HaRav Shraga Kallus-
Does a sleeper have a chiyuv in mitzvot?  It’s complicated!  When should you wake someone to do a mitzvah?  Why do so many people not sleep in the sukkah?  Specific applications discussed.

HaRav Asher Weiss-
Sitting in the sukkah in the rain – is it still a mitzvah?  R’Weiss’s theory is that reward (at least seguli) follows making HKB”H happy, not necessarily the mitzvah act (e.g. a shaliach gets the reward, not the mshaleiach)

HaRav Nisan Kaplan-
Lomdus on dofen akumah, gud asik et al.

HaRav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler-
