  1. The Chabad piece shoots down a strawman. The typical traditionally observant Jew who is annoyed with their asking everyone “are you Jewish?” is not annoyed with it simply because that’s how they do things. They’re annoyed with Chabad’s acting like there is The Rebbe, whose derekh is the One True Derekh, only one leader can be the conceptual descendent of “Shemuel in his generation is like Moshe in his generation”, and other effects of their belief that he alone is “the Essence and Self of G-d wrapped in a body”. Which even though presumably understood non-heretically, it still dismisses our variants of Torah observance and our rabbis.

For example: If a town has a shul, even a kollel already aimed at kiruv running a shul, but no shaliach — the territory is seen as just as ripe. Because their vision of getting Torah out there is not satisfied with any of the “70 facets”, there is only one approach to Torah they

With that background, anything Chabad did would be seen through jaundiced eyes.

Claiming it’s privileged allows the author to avoid exploring a real problem in communal relations stemming from his side of the bridge.
