  1. Re “The Myth of Scientific Objectivity”: In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig pointed out that the scientific method leaves the actual creation of hypotheses as well as the question of which observations to trouble oneself to make up to the individual scientist. Scientific Method gives us a way to eliminate false hypotheses, and to gain confidence in the theories that remain. But there is a seed to the whole process that does rest on an individual’s encounter with the objective. And so, the notion of “feminist science” may yet be true. It wouldn’t produce conflicting theories; the method guarantees that anything to make it past the hypotheses stage was objectively tested. (Assuming practice actually kept to proper methodology.) But the list of topics to be studied, or observations to be explained, may well be broader if our scientific community had more diversity. We would be exploring more avenues and testing ideas in more ways. We would reach right answers more quickly.

  2. Re “It’s Time To Dispense With The Vanity Spending In Orthodox Communities”: I think it needs saying. But I deeply question R Shafran’s choice of doing so in The Forward. Do we really need the anti-Orthodox Jew hating us for being both poor and drains on the economy as well as rich people who misspend our wealth?
