Rabbi Gil Student is the Editor of TorahMusings.com, a leading website on Orthodox Jewish scholarly subjects, and the Book Editor of the Orthodox Union’s Jewish Action magazine.   1. If a scotch or whiskey is aged in a barrel which has previously held wine or port why is is still kosher lechatchila? Such a barrel would not be used unless it was mosif tam and bitul beshishim is only bidi-eved. Is it because wine is really not yayin nesech now adays (only sta’am yaynom)?
