  1. The misheberach thing has always intrigued me – I chalk it up to the tzibbur wanting to do it (to feel comfort that they are doing something for a loved one etc.) and Rabbinic leadership choosing not to use their limited supply of chits on opposing it. I’d be interested in other views.
